The international project PATINA explores memorial sites related to the Second World War and the Holocaust in countries of former Yugoslavia. The project was initiated by artist Mathias Weinfurter, and organized together with Synnika e.V., Frankfurt/Main, and Grupa arhitekata, Belgrade. It brought together participants to engage with the memorial sites and critically reflect on contemporary practices of remembrance.
From June 16 to 27, 2025, the project included a research journey through Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Serbia, visiting key antifascist monuments. During and after the trip, the participants developed individual responses to the sites in the form of artistic or research-based contributions across a variety of media.
The participants represented a wide spectrum of disciplines – including visual and performing arts, art history, journalism, design, content creation, social and historical sciences, architecture, and photography – bringing diverse perspectives to the project. This approach fostered interdisciplinary dialogue, creating productive intersections between artistic and theoretical practices.
Complementing the journey, a program of lectures and workshops led by experts in memory culture, conservation, and related fields provided essential context and offered critical reflection on practices and cultures of remembrance. The outcomes of the project are currently in development and will be presented both in a print publication and through a public exhibition.
PATINA is curated by Jelica Jovanović, Naomi Rado, and Mathias Weinfurter, with production management by Anna Boldt. The project was funded by the Foundation EVZ.
